Photographers
Web sites are a great opportunity for photographers to exhibit their work, both to the public and as a portfolio to potential clients. They are also a great opportunity for me to see, and work with, some fantastic photos. The goal of any site that contains a lot of images is to create a balance between image quality and file size and finding this balance is especially important when the images are the single most important part of the site.
If you have the time, the sites below contain wonderful photos of various styles and subject matter and are definitely worth a look.
If you are looking for an example of something particular the 'Features' section under each title summarises the main techniques used on the site.
The text goes into more detail regarding the design ideas behind the sites, and the screen shots link to the actual site so you can have a look for yourself.
Let me know what you think about the sites in my portfolio - sign the feedback book.
Phil Aynsley Photography - www.philaphoto.com
Features: Static & Updateable photo gallery, search engine, content based on visitor settings.
Phil Aynsley is a Sydney based freelance photographer. The site design was based on Phils' existing letterhead and logo.

I have used two different techniques for presenting a photo gallery or series of images. The first technique, used in the main photo galleries, creates 2 columns of thumbnails on either side of the large image. Clicking a thumbnail changes the large image in the middle. The photo gallery detects the visitors screen resolution and displays the most appropriately sized large image.

The second image gallery is a library which houses hundreds of Phils photos. The gallery is completely updateable by Phil - he can continue to add images, labels and titles to the library without any assistance from me. While the library was originally based on an open source script I have modified it extensively (almost beyond recognition) to incorporate many extras features.

The main feature that I developed was a shopping cart system. As visitors browse through the library images can be added to their 'transparency sleeve'. The contents of the sleeve can then be viewed and modified at any time. When the visitor is ready to place their order they are presented with a form to complete and submit. The questions on the form vary depending on whether the order is for personal or business use.
Brett Odgers - www.brettodgers.com
Features: Flash photo gallery, clients only section, Collaboration
Brett Odgers is a Sydney based freelance photographer. The visual design of the site was created by Brett as a starting point and I then took these ideas and brought them to life using Flash.

The site creates an atmosphere of energy and vibrancy through various Flash based movements and puts a new spin (literally) on the way a series of photos are presented.

This is a great example of the way that Flash can be used to break away from the norm, in this case the standard gallery format, and introduce a unique way of presenting material on the site.

The 3d rotating menus add dimension and character to the site and at the same time have practical use as they reduce the amount of space taken up by the thumbnails.

The site also features a protected section where clients can use their own personal password to log in and access their works in progress.
John Porter Photography - www.johnporter.com.au
Features: Photo Gallery

John Porter is a Sydney based freelance photographer.

The design idea behind John Porters sight was 'clean and simple'.

By presenting a small collection of photos (6 galleries of 8 images each) with a simple uncluttered design the focus of each page remains on the most important part - the images themselves.

This idea is furthered by the use of the simple thumbnail - > large image navigation technique.
