STANDARD CONTENT
One of the most common things clients first tell me is "I want something simple..". There's a lot to be said for simple text and graphics based web sites and now that something called CSS styles is becoming widespread a text/graphic web site can be just as visually pleasing as a site created with Flash. Keeping it simple can help to maintain fast loading times and using common methods of navigation and information presentation reduces the time a new visitor to your site has to spend working out how to get around.
A note on usability
In the context of web sites, usability basically refers to the ease with which visitors are able to use and understand your web site. Usability is a hot topic on the web - On one hand some people believe web sites should be purely practical, allowing users (their word, not mine!) to access the information they came for as quickly as possible, often at the expense of individuality, innovation and emotion. Then there are others (like me) who feel that web site visitors are not actually 'users' but people with feelings and emotions and there is a lot more to it than practicality. Find out more about this in the 'Background' section.
Navigation
While programs like Flash open up opportunities for any kind of navigation system imaginable, there's a lot to be said for the traditional 3-panel technique. As soon as a visitor arrives they find themselves in a familiar environment and can instantly begin to navigate through the site. Sometimes the time it takes for a person to work out how on earth they get around a site is just enough time for them to decide to leave.
On the other hand, encountering the familiar 3 panel layout may be enough to cause a person to leave because they are after a more innovative web experience.
As with pretty much any web design technique - it just depends on the audience.
  Images
For a long time now designers have been able to break the square image barrier.
I use photoshop 7 to optimise all images I use on a site for the web. This great feature reduces file size in a big way while leaving visible image quality pretty much unchanged.

Don't know which font to use ? I have over 3000 fonts so there's bound to be one that will convey the required emotion (It's just a matter of finding it....).
